If you're thinking of trying Linux use a Live Cd. These Cds can be purchased or you can download and burn the (.iso)file for free except for the cost of the Cd. If you would like to burn your own (.iso)file you must have a CD/DVD burner. For further information click on burn iso. By using a Live Cd you aren't installing the Operating System, you are booting the Operating System from the Cd and it's the safe way to try Linux!
The Hard Drive isn't harmed in any way and the procedure can be reversed if the original fee is paid. Windows is placed on Partition (hda1) and Linux is placed on Partition (hda2), then you'll have a Swap Partition on (hda3). I do recommend creating a 4th partition (hda4) to save your Windows and Linux partitions as a backup. ![]() During the installation of your Linux Distro a boot loader is installed. This is how you can choose what operating system you want to boot when your computer boots up. You can choose a default operating system that will automatically boot if you don't want to make a choice. After your Linux Distro is installed it will configured so you'll feel comfortable using it. ![]() The Linux Distro I recommend is Pclinux because it's more like Windows and comes loaded with Firefox plugins. I don't understand why Ubuntu is being sold to the public as an alternative to Windows when it isn't even close. If I had to sum it up, Ubuntu is a generic Linux OS as compared to Pclinux. Don't take my word for it, try both and you'll see for yourself! Remember Linux isn't Windows and this operating system is more secure than Windows which makes it a smart choice. Say Good-bye to Windows updates, Viruses and the dreaded BSOD(Blue Screen of Death). I made the switch years ago and I'm glad I did, and the best part is most Linux Distros are Free!
