Windows XP

These are general computer setup instructions for Windows XP. I'm not responsible for your use of the instructions or any software that you may install.

Change the Screen Resolution

  • Right click on the Desktop-->Display Modes-->True/High Color-->Screen Resolution
  • Click on image for larger view

    Change the Refresh Rate (Only applies to CRT Monitors)

  • Right click on the Desktop-->Properties-->Settings-->Advanced-->Monitor-->Screen Refresh Rate-->Apply-->Ok

    Box must be checked in last image

    Remove Uneeded Programs

    Decide what programs you want to keep. Keep only the programs you will use!

  • Click on Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs
  • Always uninstall programs through Add or Remove Programs
  • After uninstalling programs check for folders in C:\Program Files
  • Run a Registry Cleaner after uninstalling programs
  • Download Registry RepairDownload Registry Repair

    Programs that are uninstalled may be hidden on your computer.

  • Click on Start-->Control Panel-->Folder Options-->Check show hidden files and folders

  • Click on My Computer-->C:Drive-->Documents and Settings-->Open each user folder-->
    Application Data-->Delete uninstalled program folder
  • When finished go back to Folder Options and check "Do not show hidden files and folders".
  • Install Avast Antivirus, CCleaner, and Spybot
  • Note: Using the Immunize feature in Spybot will change your Windows hosts file, but creates a backup hosts file. Websites added to your hosts file by Spybot won't be viewable. The hosts file is located @ C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC.
